UK (Exeter)
Places visited: Exeter, Salisbury (Stone henge)
Time: September 2019 for a week.
Top things:
(1) Exeter is a Small town (that's small with a capital 'S').
(2) If you do happen to visit the Southern part of UK, take a lot of day trips.
I recently attended a conference in Exeter, UK. So I took a flight to London and then a train to Exeter. If you plan on doing the same, please reserve your train seat in advance. If you don't, you'll spend a lot of time walking through train cars looking for unreserved seats. Also, as soon as the trains pull up in the station, there is mad rush to get into the train. There's pushing and pulling involved. This, I don't know why.
Exeter is a (small) town, at best. Most businesses including cabs do not accept credit cards so you are expected to always have cash on you. The hotels in Exeter are dated and I don't think there are any decent Airbnbs. You can walk the whole city is less than a couple of hours. There's a church you will stumble upon and that's the only attraction in Exeter. Use Deliveroo if want to get food delivered to your hotel. Exeter was completely deserted during my trip (because the Univeristy of Exeter was closed for some break) and so I opted to get food delivered on all days during my stay. The quality of food was 'meh'. If you are traveling from the US, don't forget to take the travel (power) adapter. I forgot to take mine, and there were no shops in Exeter selling it. I had to ship it online to some nearby store and pick it up the next day. Lesson learnt: pack thoroughly if traveling to Exeter.
Leave Exeter and take day trips to the Stonehenge (Salisbury) and Bath. Bath is a bigger city that Exeter and has lots more to see and do. The Roman Baths and the Bath abbey are totally worth seeing. Additionally, there is a nice shopping area in the city center.
Stonehenge was on my bucket-list forever and I was excited to see it. It was smaller than I had pictured in my head, but still, I loved it. There is only one tour company (https://www.thestonehengetour.info/) that has buses going to Stonehenge from the Salisbury railway station and you can purchase tickets beforehand or on the day of (from the driver). The tour also stops at Old Sarum, if you wish to see it. I opted to see Old Sarum and was surprised that not many people got off the bus with me. Old Sarum is a bit of a hike from the bus stop and there were less than 5 people when I visited. Overall, I liked it. The full Stonehenge tour to and from the Salisbury train station can be done in 3 hours.
