Thailand (Bangkok)
Places visited: Bangkok
Time: December 2019 for ~5 days
General tips:
(1) There are lots of overhead electric wires all over Bangkok.
(2) Bangkok does not have as many high-rises as I expected.
(3) The palaces are gorgeous.
(4) There are probably more massage parlors in Bangkok than the rest of the world combined.
Stay in a hotel. For $, you'll get excellent hotels in Bangkok. Indulge in as many massages as you can pack during your trip. More than one massage a day is OK too. It's Bangkok, afterall. However, carefully choose the massage parlors. Make sure they are authentic and hygenic.
Take a home-based Thai cooking class. They will take you to the local markets to buy ingredients, which is very educational.
The Grand Palace and the Temple of Emerald Buddha are stunning. But they are also very crowded. Go early in the morning. Men and women, wear long skirts/pants and tops with sleeves. Else, you'll be forced to buy clothes to cover up. Did you know that Hinduism (and the Ramayana especially) had a major place in their temples?
You'll see pictures and small shrines for the current king all over Bangkok. This was interesting and I didn't expect it.
Take a quick walk through the red light street in the night time. It's an experience.
