Mexico (Tulum, Chichen Itza, Cancun)

Places visited: Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Chichen Itza
Time: December 20th for about 1 week

General tips:
(1) Cancun is super touristy. Has lots of resorts. If you don't like loud, noisy, crowded places, spend very little time in Cancun.
(2) AirBnB's in Playa del Carmen are excellent. I would suggest spending more time in Playa than in Cancun.
(3) Go to the archeological sites in Tulum 1-2 hours before they close. You will have the whole place to yourself. Otherwise, it can be very crowded.

Cancun is very touristy and the food is mediocre. We didn't stay in a resort because all resorts were expensive around the time we traveled.Instead, we stayed in a high-rise, beach-front AirBnb. The views were mind-blowing and the evening ocean-breeze was everything. Within a couple of days however, we wanted to leave and see something other than the ocean.

Next, we went to Playa del Carmen and liked it so much more than Cancun. Playa has a nice city center with hip cafes and restaurants. The AirBnb we stayed in was inexpensive, close to the city center and had a nice private garden. Playa's beach water was cold around the time we visited. Even though we liked walking in the beach sand, we didn't want to get in the water.

We took day trips to Tulum and Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen. Be prepared to do a decent amount of walking in both places. If you don't like walking or are travelling with a kid, Tulum has tuktuks which you can rent.

The archaeological sites at both Chichen Itza and Tulum are both well preserved. You'll enjoy them.
